10 Habits of Highly Successful People Who Enjoy Balance in Their Lives
As summer winds down and fall approaches, there’s something about the change of season that makes us want to reset. New routines, cooler days, changing schedules, and the return to a more structured pace of life can all be a good reminder to check in with ourselves.
But here’s something worth remembering: success isn’t only about how much you accomplish. Many highly successful people also make time for their health, relationships, rest, and the things that bring them happiness. That balance can be important for both physical and mental well-being.
So, as we head into fall, let’s look at 10 habits that can help create a healthier and more balanced life—while also making it a little easier to keep up with everything that matters.
1. They Start Their Day With Intention
You don’t need a complicated morning routine to start your day well. Successful people often simply give themselves a little time to think about what they want to accomplish rather than immediately rushing into the day.
That might mean eating breakfast, drinking a glass of water, taking a short walk, reviewing your schedule, or spending a few quiet minutes without your phone. As fall brings changes to daylight and daily schedules, it can be a natural time to establish a morning routine that works for you.
2. They Make Movement a Priority
Regular physical activity can support heart health, muscle strength, mobility, energy, and mental well-being. The good news is that exercise doesn't have to mean spending hours at the gym.
Walking, hiking, cycling, gardening, recreational sports, and simply spending more time outdoors can all help you stay active. Fall can be a wonderful time to take advantage of cooler temperatures by getting outside for a walk or exploring a local trail.
3. They Take Sleep Seriously
When life gets busy, sleep can be one of the first things to get pushed aside. But getting adequate, quality sleep is an important part of taking care of your physical and mental health.
A consistent bedtime, a comfortable sleeping environment, and time to unwind before bed can all help create a healthier sleep routine. Instead of thinking of sleep as lost productivity, think of it as an investment in tomorrow.
4. They Know When to Disconnect
Being productive doesn't mean working every waking hour. People who maintain balance understand that stepping away from work, email, and technology can give the mind a chance to recharge.
With fall bringing busier work and school schedules, try setting aside some time each day when you aren't checking emails or responding to work messages. Even a short break can help create some breathing room.
5. They Make Time for Relationships
Good relationships are an important part of a healthy life. Making time for family, friends, and the people who support you can help reduce feelings of isolation and provide an important source of connection.
Fall offers plenty of opportunities to reconnect. Invite someone on a walk, share a meal, plan a weekend activity, or simply pick up the phone and call someone you haven't talked to recently.
6. They Pay Attention to What They Eat
Healthy eating doesn't have to mean following a restrictive diet. A balanced approach that includes a variety of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and protein can help provide the nutrients your body needs.
The change of season also brings an entirely new selection of foods to enjoy. Apples, squash, pumpkin, leafy greens, and other seasonal produce can make healthy meals interesting and enjoyable rather than feeling like another chore.
7. They Make Mental Health a Priority
Taking care of your mental health is just as important as taking care of your physical health. Successful, balanced people recognize that stress is a normal part of life, but they also make room for activities that help them manage it.
Reading, spending time outdoors, pursuing hobbies, practicing mindfulness, journaling, or simply having some quiet time can all provide an opportunity to reset. And when additional support is needed, talking with a qualified healthcare professional can be an important step.
8. They Set Healthy Boundaries
Balance is difficult when every request gets an immediate “yes.” Setting reasonable boundaries can help protect time for work, family, exercise, rest, and personal interests.
As fall gets underway and calendars begin filling with activities and commitments, consider taking a close look at what truly deserves your time. Saying no to something that isn't a priority can sometimes mean saying yes to your own well-being.
9. They Don't Ignore Preventive Healthcare
Taking care of your health isn't just about going to the doctor when you're sick. Preventive healthcare can include routine checkups, recommended screenings, dental care, and conversations with healthcare professionals about your individual health needs.
Fall is a great time to get preventative healthcare appointments on the calendar.
10. They Make Room for Enjoyment
Perhaps the most important habit is remembering that life isn't just about getting things done. Hobbies, travel, outdoor adventures, music, sports, cooking, reading, and time with loved ones can all contribute to a satisfying and balanced life.
Fall is full of opportunities to slow down and enjoy the season. Take a scenic drive, visit a farmers market, go for a hike, enjoy a favorite seasonal meal, or spend an afternoon outside. You don't have to wait until you have more free time—sometimes you have to make the time.
Make This Fall Your Season to Reset
You don't have to completely change your life when a new season begins. In fact, small changes are often easier to maintain than dramatic ones. Choose one or two habits that feel realistic and start there.
Maybe this fall you'll commit to walking three times a week. Maybe you'll establish a better bedtime routine, make more time for family, schedule a preventive healthcare appointment, or finally take that weekend hike you've been talking about.
The goal isn't perfection. It's creating routines that help you feel healthier, less stressed, and more present in your everyday life.
Your Health Is Part of Your Overall Success
Success looks different for everyone. For some people, it means reaching a career goal. For others, it means having more time with family, enjoying good health, traveling, pursuing a passion, or simply having enough energy to enjoy everyday life.
